Hardware Hacking: ParisEmbedded Meetup #2

Yesterday, I attended the second edition of the ParisEmbedded Meetup hosted once again at JoshFire. The first meeting's write up is here.

Jordan McRae first talked about the B-Squares modular electronic blocks, a project that got funded on Kickstarter. We learned a thing or two about how Kickstarter works. I was surprised to hear that the Kickstarter feature of the week was a large boost in the number of people adhering and putting money in the project. We also learned that getting some press was also central for a linear growth of Kickstarter customers backers but that the effect was not as large as the boost provided by the internal feature of the week bit. Some bits of advice were given with regards to provisional patents being filed before entering Kickstarter and the potential issues with filling a small order in a town like Shenzen and the eventual logistics issues. I liked the insights very much. The KickStarter video presentation of the product is here

Pierre Ficheux provided some insight about the potential use of a Real Time OS on the Raspberry PI platform. Some of it was already written up in a blog entry: PREEMPT-RT sur Raspberry Pi. Interesting.

Finally, I closed the presentation round with some thoughts on Successes and Failures of Autonomous Things in Space and on Land with a lessons' learned focus. It featured four different projects which on the outside do not have clear connections.

I very much liked the side discussions we had afterwards. Christophe Blaess has a write-up of the meeting in French.

Many thanks go to JoshFire and Pierre-Rudolf for organizing the meeting.

[Update: Yoann also wrote a piece on the meeting ]
